This is a type of thick multiple plywood coated with a hard (usually brown) surface with a faint sieve-like pattern on it. Often used for trailer floors and work benches.
I've even used it myself, but I can't remember the commom English name for it.
Can anyone please help?

So I phoned them up and the generic name is simply "Phenolic ply(wood)". I recognised it as soon as he uttered the words. Been living abroad too long, methinks."

I'm not sure what you're asking, but the top layer certainly sounds like what's called "masonite"in the US; it's also used on cheap furniture (for backs, and bottoms of drawers. Masonite, however, comes in 1/4 in. max. thickness.
I am not familiar with a plywood-type product you are describing.

Can it be multy-ply plywood onto which a phenolic resin(hence the brown colour) impregnated paper has been hot-laminated to increase wear resistance? The finish is normally determined by the surface finish of the press platen.
